How attack damage, armor and critical hits are calculated.

| Name | Summary |
|---|---|
Armor and toughness | Each armor point blocks 4% of a hit, up to 80% at 20 points, and strong hits count fewer armor points unless the wearer has armor toughness. |
Armor points | Only whole armor points count: a fractional armor value is rounded down before damage is reduced. |
Attack charge | After each swing a weapon recharges over 20 ÷ attack speed game ticks, and attacks made before it is full deal less damage. |
Attack damage | A melee hit deals between 20% and 100% of the weapon's attack damage, depending on attack charge. |
Critical hits | An attack made while falling, at more than 90% attack charge, deals 1.5 times the weapon's damage. |
Protection | Protection enchantments block 4% of matching damage per protection point, up to 80% at 20 points. |
Sweeping attacks | A sword attack sweeps when it is made at more than 90% attack charge while standing on the ground, and is neither a critical hit nor a sprint-knockback hit. |
Sweeping damage | A sweeping attack deals 1 damage to each mob next to the target, plus a share of the main hit's damage when the sword has Sweeping Edge. |
