How the game works it out

| Search square | The game looks for portal blocks up to 16 blocks away in the Nether and 128 in the Overworld, along X and Z, at any height |
| Which portal | The portal block closest to the spot, height included; on a tie the lower one |
| No portal found | The game builds a new portal near the spot, looking up to 16 blocks around for room |
| Linking two portals | Build the second portal at the matching spot (divided or multiplied by 8) so each one is the closest to the other's spot |
