Weather
Rain and thunderstorms happen only in the Overworld; rain lasts 10 to 20 minutes and returns after 10 to 150 minutes.
| Dimensions | Rain and thunder occur only in the Overworld. The Nether and The End have no weather. |
| Rain | Rain lasts 10 to 20 minutes (12,000 to 24,000 ticks). The dry spell before the next rain lasts 10 to 150 minutes (12,000 to 180,000 ticks). |
| Thunder | Thunder lasts 3 to 13 minutes (3,600 to 15,600 ticks), with 10 to 150 minutes between spells. It runs on its own timer, separate from rain. |
| Thunderstorm | A thunderstorm needs rain and thunder at the same time. Thunder without rain has no effect. |
| Fading | Rain and thunder take 5 seconds (100 ticks) to fade in or out when they start or stop. |
| Rain on a spot | A spot is rained on when it is raining, nothing above the spot blocks the sky, and the biome gives rain there instead of snow. |
| Snow | Where the temperature is below 0.15, rain falls as snow. Above Y 80 the temperature drops with height, so rain turns to snow on high ground. |
| Sleeping | When players sleep through the night while it rains, rain and thunder stop. This needs the Update weather game rule to be on. |
| Game rule | With the Update weather game rule off, the weather stays as it is and its timers stop. |
| Frozen game | Weather does not advance while the game is frozen with /tick freeze. |
