Stem Fruit Growth

Game mechanic

Stem Fruit Growth

A fully grown Melon or Pumpkin Stem tries to place a fruit on one random side, and the try fails unless that spot is air above a suitable ground block.

Rules

Stem stages0 to 7. Only a stage 7 stem grows fruit.
Light neededLight level 9 or higher, for stem growth and for fruit.
Growth timingStems grow on random ticks: at random moments, on average once every 68.27 seconds per block at the default random tick speed of 3.
Growth chanceEach random tick uses the same Farmland points and chance as crops, 1 in 3 at best. This applies to every stem stage and to every fruit try.
Fruit sideFor each fruit try the stem picks 1 of its 4 sides at random. If that side is not suitable the try fails; the other sides are not checked.
Fruit spaceThe chosen spot must be air and must have a fruit ground block under it.
Fruit groundThe same for Melon and Pumpkin: Coarse Dirt, Dirt, Farmland, Grass Block, Moss Block, Mud, Muddy Mangrove Roots, Mycelium, Pale Moss Block, Podzol, Rooted Dirt.
Stem groundMelon Stems and Pumpkin Stems grow only on Farmland.
After the fruitThe stem attaches to the fruit and grows no second one. When the fruit is removed, it becomes a stage 7 stem again.
Bone MealAdds 2 to 5 stages. A stem that reaches stage 7 this way gets one immediate fruit try; the fruit is not guaranteed.
