Farmland Hydration

Game mechanic

Farmland Hydration

Water within 4 blocks keeps Farmland hydrated; without water or rain it dries out step by step and then turns into Dirt.

Rules

Water rangeWater up to 4 blocks away horizontally, diagonals included, at the Farmland's own height or 1 block higher. That is a 9 x 9 area with the Farmland in the middle.
What counts as waterStill water, flowing water and waterlogged blocks.
RainRain falling on the space directly above the Farmland hydrates it like water.
TimingFarmland changes on random ticks: at random moments, on average once every 68.27 seconds per block at the default random tick speed of 3.
MoistureMoisture runs from 0 (dry) to 7 (fully hydrated). With water or rain, a random tick sets it straight to 7. Without them, each random tick lowers it by 1.
Turning into DirtFarmland at moisture 0 with nothing planted on it turns into Dirt on its next random tick without water or rain.
Kept by plantsDry Farmland stays Farmland while one of these is on it: Wheat Crops, Carrots, Potatoes, Beetroots, Melon Stem, Pumpkin Stem, Attached Melon Stem, Attached Pumpkin Stem, Pitcher Crop, Torchflower Crop, Torchflower.
Kept by Fence GatesA Fence Gate of any kind on top also keeps dry Farmland from turning into Dirt.
Solid block on topFarmland turns into Dirt when a solid block is placed on it.
