Composting

Game mechanic

Composting

A Composter needs 7 layers of compost to produce 1 Bone Meal, and each item put in has a 30% to 100% chance of adding a layer.

Rules

Layers needed7 layers of compost fill a Composter. The filled Composter then produces 1 Bone Meal.
First itemThe first item put into an empty Composter always adds a layer.
Later itemsWith 1 to 6 layers, each item adds 1 layer with its own chance: 30%, 50%, 65%, 85% or 100%. The item is used up whether or not a layer is added.
Becoming ready1 second (20 game ticks) after the 7th layer, the compost turns into Bone Meal that can be collected.
CollectingUsing the ready Composter drops 1 Bone Meal and empties it.
Full ComposterA Composter with 7 layers, or with Bone Meal ready, takes no more items.
HoppersA Hopper above feeds compostable items in while there are fewer than 7 layers. A Hopper below takes the Bone Meal out. Hoppers at the sides neither insert nor remove anything.
ComparatorSignal strength equals the number of layers: 0 when empty, 7 when full, 8 when Bone Meal is ready.
