Mining mechanic
Block breaking
Each game tick of mining adds mining speed ÷ hardness ÷ 30 to a block's breaking progress, and the block breaks when the progress reaches 1.
| Progress per tick | Mining speed ÷ block hardness ÷ 30, when the held tool is right for the block or the block needs no particular tool. |
| Wrong tool | If the block needs a particular tool and the held item is not right for it, the divisor is 100, not 30. |
| Instant break | A block breaks at once when a single tick's progress is 1 or more: mining speed of at least 30 x hardness. |
| Unbreakable blocks | Blocks with hardness −1, such as Bedrock, never gain progress. |
| Examples | Dirt (hardness 0.5) by hand: 15 ticks, 0.75 seconds. Stone (1.5) with a Diamond Pickaxe: 6 ticks, 0.3 seconds. Obsidian (50) with a Diamond Pickaxe: 188 ticks, 9.4 seconds. |
