Command
/summon
Creates a new entity, such as a mob, at a position.
| /summon <entity> [<pos> [<nbt>]] |
| Argument | Kind of value | What to type |
|---|---|---|
| <entity> | Game id | The id of the entity type to summon, for example minecraft:zombie. The id of an entity. |
| <pos> | Exact position | Where the entity appears, as three coordinates that may have decimals. Defaults to the position the command is run from. |
| <nbt> | Data in braces | Entity data in curly braces, such as a custom name or the no AI setting. |
| Permission level | 2: operators, worlds with cheats on, command blocks and functions |
| Works in | Singleplayer with cheats enabled, multiplayer servers, command blocks and functions. Needs permission level 2 (gamemasters): operators, players in a world with cheats enabled, command blocks and functions. |
| Result | Reports "Summoned new" followed by the entity's name. The number /execute store saves is 1. |
| No position | Without a position the entity appears where the command is run from. |
| Entity data | Extra data goes in curly braces after the position, for example {CustomName:"Bob",NoAI:1b}. The position must be written before the data. |
| Random spawn setup | Without data, a mob gets its usual random spawn setup, the same as a naturally spawned one. When data is given, this setup is skipped and the mob has only what the data says plus its defaults. |
| Peaceful difficulty | Mobs that are not allowed in Peaceful cannot be summoned in Peaceful: "Monsters cannot be summoned in Peaceful difficulty". |
| Position limits | The position must be within 30,000,000 blocks of the center horizontally and between Y -20,000,000 and Y 20,000,000, otherwise the command fails with "Invalid position for summon". |
| Entities that cannot be summoned | Players and Fishing Bobbers cannot be summoned and fail with "Can't summon entity of type ...". |
| Other failures | "Unable to summon entity" means the entity could not be created from the data. "Unable to summon entity due to duplicate UUIDs" means the data contains a UUID that an existing entity already uses. |
| Passengers | Entities listed under Passengers in the data are summoned together with the main entity and ride it. |
