Command
/msg
Sends a private message to one or more players; /tell and /w are the same command.
| /msg <targets> <message> |
| /tell ... (the same as /msg) |
| /w ... (the same as /msg) |
| Argument | Kind of value | What to type |
|---|---|---|
| <targets> | Target selector | The player or players who receive the message: a player name or a target selector that only matches players. One or more players. |
| <message> | Message | The text to send. It can contain spaces and runs to the end of the line. |
| Permission level | 0: every player |
| Works in | Everyone can use it: no operator status or cheats needed. Works in singleplayer, on multiplayer servers, in command blocks and in functions. |
| Short forms | /tell and /w |
| Result | Each recipient sees "<sender> whispers to you: <message>" and the sender sees "You whisper to <player>: <message>" for each recipient. The number /execute store saves is the number of players the message was sent to. |
| Aliases | /tell and /w work exactly like /msg. |
| Selectors | Choosing recipients with a target selector such as @a needs permission level 2. Without it, type the player's name. Selectors inside the message text are also only replaced with names for senders with level 2. |
| Only players | Recipients must be players who are online. If no player matches, the command fails. |
| Filtered messages | If the server's chat filter hides the whole message from a recipient, the sender is told "The server has hidden your message for some players." |
