Levels last one battle
Hero XP is not kept between battles: every battle starts the hero at level 1 with 0 XP. Skills gain levels I, II and III at hero levels 2, 5 and 8 (first skill) and 4, 7 and 10 (second skill).

A hero can be picked once its stage is open on the map, after the stage before it is won.
