Translate a page

This guide is about the words inside a page: its headings and paragraphs. Short bits like button names live in the dictionary instead, covered by Translate labels.

Translate this page

You do not translate a whole wiki at once. You pick one page, pick a language, and fill in that page’s text as a side-by-side list: the original on the left, your box on the right.

The translation table: the original word on the left, your translation on the right. An empty box just means it is not translated yet.
  1. Open the page you want to translate.
  2. Click the round info button in the page dock, then Translate under Tools.
  3. Click the language you want.
  4. Type your translation next to each line, then click Save.

You do not have to finish in one sitting. Only the lines you actually typed are part of your change, and empty boxes are left alone rather than filled in for you.

If your wiki reviews edits

On wikis where edits are checked first, Save sends your lines to review instead of putting them live.

Each lineGets an In review tag right under its box.
Saving againUpdates the same proposal rather than opening a second one.
Changed your mindWithdraw my proposal takes the whole thing back, so nobody has to review it.
A reviewerSees your lines with a tick box each, and can accept some now and leave the rest.

Every decision, who proposed and who accepted, shows up on the wiki’s Recent changes page.

What happens to the page

You never touch the layout. Pictures, boxes and the order of things stay the same in every language. You are only swapping the words.

It starts as a draftHalf-finished work never shows to readers. Save a part-way page and nobody outside sees the empty lines.
No holes, everA line with no translation yet shows the wiki’s main language instead.
