Sponsors and ads

Reader pages carry ads from Wikily’s ad partner: a rail beside the article and bands between sections. That is what pays for hosting, and it is the same on every wiki. Readers with Premium see none of it.

Your own banners live under Manage › Sponsors. They do not compete with those ads; they fill the gaps.

Your own banners

One switch turns the banners on; each banner has the size it was made for and a weight.
  1. Open Manage › Sponsors.
  2. Add a banner: its size, the image, and the URL it links to.
  3. Give it a weight.
  4. Turn the switch on and save.

Weight is how often one is picked relative to others of the same size. A banner on 3 shows about three times as often as one on 1.

Write the alt text properly. It is what a reader with images off or a screen reader gets.

Where they show

The railBeside the article on wide screens, when the partner leaves it unfilled.
Ad bands in pagesThe same rule: an unfilled band shows one of your banners instead of an empty box.
Readers blocking adsPartner ads never load for them, so every slot one of your banners fits shows it.
Sponsor slot blockA fixed banner you place on a page yourself. It always shows the image you give it.

A Sponsor slot is a block like any other (see the block reference). One in a shared layout appears on every entry built from it.

If a later refresh of the slot sells, the partner ad takes it back. Your banner never replaces an ad someone paid for.

Sizes

A slot only takes a banner made for a size it can hold. Make the sizes you need:

Rail300x600 half page, or 160x600 skyscraper
Band in a page336x280 or 300x250 rectangle
Band on a phone336x280, 300x250, 320x100 or 320x50
Wide band970x90 or 728x90; the first wide band on a page also takes a 970x250 billboard

One 300x600 and one 300x250 cover most slots. A 300x600 also fills the narrower 160-wide rail, scaled down.

What it never does

Outbid the partnerBanners only fill slots nobody bought.
Run scriptsA banner is an image and a link. No cookies, no tracking.
Show on Manage pagesEditors and admin screens carry no ads of either kind.
