Translations overview
Updated 2026-07-14
A wiki can speak many languages. This page is the map of how it all fits together: what you can translate, how an admin turns on a new language, and where to go next for each job.
What you can translate
There are three kinds of things you can translate, and they each have their own guide:
- Page text. The words in your articles - headings, paragraphs, captions. Every page can be written again in another language.
- Labels and names. The short bits of text all over the wiki: buttons, menus, section titles, and item names. They live together in one big list people call the dictionary.
- Game data. Wikis built from a game keep facts in datasets, like a spreadsheet of spells or weapons. Text columns such as a spell name can be translated too.
Nothing ever breaks while a language is half done. If a word, a page, or a data field has no translation yet, visitors simply see the wiki’s main language instead. There are never blank holes.
Add a language
A wiki admin decides which languages the wiki speaks. It all happens in one place: the Languages card in Settings.
- Open your wiki and click Manage.
- Click Settings.
- In the Languages card, tick the language you want to add.
- Click Save changes.
Once a language is on, it shows up as a tappable pill everywhere you translate, and readers can switch to it. Now you are ready to start filling it in.
Pick a path
Choose the guide that matches what you want to do:
- Translate a page - rewrite one article’s text in another language.
- Translate labels and names - fill in the dictionary of buttons, menus, and item names.
- Translate game data - turn on a dataset column and translate its text fields.
- Import and export files - download the missing words, translate them anywhere, upload them back.
- Auto-translate with AI - let an AI assistant do the first pass for admins.
- How translations behave - what updates on its own and what a person’s edits keep forever.
