Pam is a beer-loving bus driver. Most of her story revolves around her regrets, her struggles with alcoholism, and her deep yet complicated, love for her daughter, Penny. She harbors a lot of shame about her best but is immensely proud of how smart and capable her daughter is.

Penny is a tutor known for her sweet, nurturing nature. She is a elementary school teacher and her deepest life ambition is to escape poverty and start her own family. Penny is introverted and deeply values books and education, which she uses as a quiet escape from her turbulent home life. With her moms struggles she is frequently left to clean, cook, and essentially raise her own mother.
