Energy and insanity: best food, sleep and what drains you
Your energy bar is 100 minus your insanity. Here is every food and drink, ranked, and how sleep really works.
Almost everything the Keeper does costs energy: gathering, crafting, digging, studying and fighting. Insanity is the second bar, and it matters because it eats the first one - your maximum energy is 100 minus your insanity, so at 80 insanity (the cap) you only have 20 energy to work with.

- Maximum energy, minus insanity
- 80

- +100
- Most energy: Energy Potion III
- -50
- Biggest calm: Krotowuha
After two days without sleep you get Lack of sleep: "You're tired. Until you go to bed, any work will waste more energy, and your insanity will increase more quickly". Sleeping it off also takes 20 insanity away - a free insanity cure.
Energy, insanity and sleep
- What costs energy
- Some actions in the game spend your Energy. Crafting, gathering, and fighting take energy.
- What causes insanity
- Some actions generate insanity. When you are tired, any action will generate insanity.
- Why insanity hurts
- Insanity reduces your maximum energy.
- Refilling energy
- You can always refill your energy with Food and Potions. Just right-click to use them from your inventory.
- Sleeping
- Sleep in your bed to restore energy. You can only go to bed when your energy is not full or when you are tired - otherwise the Keeper refuses. Waking up saves the game.

Energy questions
What is the best food for energy?
Energy Potion III (+100), Burger (+80), Grape Juice (gold) (+60). Among everyday food, cooked dishes like the Burger give several times what raw vegetables do.
How do I lower insanity?
Sleep when you are tired (it clears Lack of sleep and 20 insanity), or drink: Krotowuha (-50), Wine (gold) (-35), Wine (silver) (-30), Wine (bronze) (-25).
Why can't I go to sleep?
The Keeper only goes to bed when his energy bar is not full or when he is tired. With a full bar he says he does not want to sleep now.
Is there a way to raise the insanity cap?
The cap works the other way: insanity stops at 80. The Iron Will perk lowers that ceiling to 70, which keeps at least 30 energy in your bar however bad it gets.
