Navigation and the home page

Updated 2026-08-13

A reader never sees a page on its own. They see your wiki around it: a sidebar, a header and footer, and a home page they probably arrived on. Three separate things, three separate screens.

Three layers, edited on three screens. The page frame wraps every page; the sidebar is your navigation; the page itself is the part that differs. Change the frame once and every page follows.

The sidebar

This is your navigation. It is built from four kinds of item.

The sidebar is a list you build: sections to group things, links to pages, a search box, dividers. Drag them into the order readers should meet them.
SectionA heading that groups what follows.
LinkPoints at one of your pages, or anywhere else.
SearchPuts the search box in the list.
DividerA line for breathing room.
  1. Open Manage › Sidebar. It opens Manage › Theme › Sidebar.
  2. Stay on the Entries tab to edit the navigation.
  3. Use Add entry, drag entries into order, and set each label and target.
  4. Click Save theme to publish the sidebar.

The Look tab next to it controls its layout and colours, and Theme › Typography its fonts. See Sidebar, colours and backgrounds for an interactive preview and the exact controls.

Keep it short. The sidebar is not an index of everything, it is the half-dozen doors a reader should notice. Deep material is reached from the pages behind those doors, and from search.

A link normally stays highlighted on pages under its destination. Use Also highlight for when related pages have a different path, such as a boss stored under Monsters.

The Bosses link still opens /bosses. Dragon and its pages now highlight Bosses.
  1. Select the link in Manage › Theme › Sidebar › Entries, or click it in the live preview.
  2. Under Also highlight for, use Pages to choose a related page. Or enter a local path and click Add path.
  3. Choose that path in the preview's current-page selector, then click Save theme.

Remove a path by deleting its line. Paths include descendants: /monsters/dragon also covers /monsters/dragon/level-60, but not /monsters/dragonling. The longest matching path wins. If two rows match the same path, the direct destination takes priority, then sidebar order.

Existing page paths keep working after dataset updates. Add a new boss page here without moving its URL. If variants have separate sibling paths, add each one too. A page rename needs its active path updated, just like an ordinary sidebar link.

A sponsor link points readers at a partner, such as a server host with an affiliate code. It looks like your other links, but always shows a Sponsored tag in the reader's language and opens in a new tab.

The tag cannot be hidden. Readers must be able to tell a paid link from your pages.
  1. In Manage › Theme › Sidebar › Entries, click Add entry and pick Sponsor from the Community group.
  2. Enter the label and the partner's full address. Optionally add a second line, an icon or logo, and a different address for some languages.
  3. Translate the label and second line in the Languages tab, then click Save theme.

The link carries rel="sponsored noopener", so search engines know it is paid. Each click is counted in your analytics as an Outbound Link: Click event with the address.

The page frame

The frame wraps every page: whatever should be on all of them, top and bottom. Edit it once and every page follows, which is the point and also the thing to be careful with.

It is built with the same blocks as a page, in the same editor, at Manage › the page frame. Somewhere in it goes the block that stands for the page itself; everything around that is the frame.

A single page can step out of the frame from its own settings, for a landing page that wants the whole screen.

The home page

The home page is where / lands. It is edited like any other page, except that it renders seamless: blocks butt against each other with no gap, so a full-width hero can run edge to edge.

If a home page looks tighter than expected, that is why. The fix is a margin on the block, not a setting you have missed.

A home page that works is usually three things: what this wiki is in one line, the few doors that matter, and something that shows the wiki is alive.
