Overview
中央アジアおよび東南アジア原産のアジアゾウ (Elephas maximus) は、長い鼻、小さな耳、灰色の皮膚、顔の周りのピンクの斑点が特徴的な動物だ。 大型の草食動物であり、森林、草原、山岳地帯など、さまざまな環境で暮らし、木の葉、樹皮、草を食べる。 アジアゾウは、アフリカゾウと比較して体は小さく、平均的なオスは体長 2.75 m、体重 4,000 kg、メスは体長 2.40 m、体重 2,400 kg である。

主に、生息エリアの喪失、悪化、分断化のため、絶滅の危機に瀕している。すべて、人間の地域開発に起因するものであり、さらに人間との共存により、さらなる問題が引き起こされている。作物を踏み荒らしたり、農場を破壊したりするなどという理由で、駆除対象となってしまうことも多い。密猟も脅威のひとつではあるが、牙が小さく、成長したオスにしかないため、アフリカゾウほどには深刻ではない。 アジアゾウの保護のため、生息地域を保護し、地域開発の結果分断された群れ同士のつながりを持たせるための活動が行われている。インドの保護団体は、問題が発生したときに適切に対応できるよう、農業従事者とゾウの間の問題の調査も実施している。

ゾウは社交性の高い動物である。メスは、結びつきの強い群れの中で、子どもと一緒に生活、移動、採餌する。仲間同士を気遣い、協力して子どもを育てる。ゾウの群れはメスを中心としたものであり、通常は、最年長のメスが群れのリーダーである。リーダーが死亡すると、次に年齢の高いメスがリーダーとなる。若いオスのゾウは、結束の緩い、パートナーのいないオスの群れの中で移動しながら、餌やパートナーを探す。ただし、成熟したオスは、単独で生活する。 アジアゾウは一年を通して繁殖可能であるが、雨季に繁殖のピークを迎える。ゾウのオスは、交尾するためにメスの群れを追いかけていく。交尾できるかどうかは、成熟度とメスが受けれるかどうかによって決まる。また発情によりテストステロンが上昇し、狂暴になったオスは、メスに気に入られやすい。パートナーとなった二頭は、追いかけ合ったり、鳴き声を上げあったりといった求愛行動をとる。 ゾウの妊娠期間は 18 ～ 22 か月で、1 頭の子を産む。子ゾウは、8 歳までは母親と一緒に過ごす。その後、メスは母親のいる群れに残り、オスは群れを離れ、若いオスの群れに加わっていく。
