About Subnautica 2 Creatures

Subnautica 2 ships 43 creature archetypes in its May 14, 2026 Early Access build, organised into Predators, Leviathans, Carnivores, Herbivores, Passive fauna and an Other bucket for entries that don't fit cleanly into a single role. Every creature has a handcrafted AI personality with full skeletal animation rather than pre-baked loops. The roster spans the new alien ocean planet in the Ariadne Arm: kelp shallows, mid-zone reefs, deep trenches and the open void beyond the crust shelf.

How the ecosystem layers work

Every creature carries a set of in-game role tags: Carnivore, Herbivore or Neutral for diet; Small, Big or Leviathan for size; and an archetype flag (Solitary, Pack, Herder, Territorial, or NotPrey) that controls how it reacts to the player. We map those tags into the six categories above. Predators are the carnivores that also carry the NotPrey or Leviathan archetype: creatures that actively hunt you.

Most species have a short-range stalker phase, a chase phase with audio cues, and a retreat threshold tied to health. Pack hunters coordinate as a group, which is why the Void Leviathan shiver attack feels different from a single Marrowbreach engagement.

What are the named Leviathans in Subnautica 2?

Two named Leviathan species ship at Early Access, with a juvenile Void Leviathan variant alongside them in the current build.

Collector Leviathan

Tyrannoteuthis phobocoeus

An enormous cephalopod predator. Tentatively classified as the tyrant squid of fearful curiosity, the Collector specialises in prying open hard-shelled prey with an armoured beak and four bioglass-tipped tentacles. A massive broadcast organ on the head emits multi-part sonar pulses, and dense bioluminescence on the body may mirror the creature's brain activity. Assessment: hunters with difficult diets tend to be intelligent and inquisitive, and any small submersible or habitat is likely to draw the Collector's interest. Avoid open water near rocky shelves.

Void Leviathan

Skythopterygion atropos

The scythe-finned fate-ender, a sexually dimorphic open-water predator. Females are much larger than males and carry long-range towed-array sonar organs at the tail. Males are smaller and faster, hunting in coordinated shivers led by a single female. The pack will engage almost anything that enters open ocean, including large submarines, and partible paternity in the brood means males compete for the most successful shivers. Assessment: sophisticated, dangerous predator. Avoid the void zones beyond the crust shelf until you have a depth-rated craft.

How do I survive Subnautica 2 creatures?

The same habits that kept divers alive in Subnautica 1 carry over, with one new variable: Biomods replace the upgrade modules of the original.

  1. 01

    Scan from a safe distance

Use the Scanner tool from a few metres away. Each scan adds a dossier entry to your PDA databank with biology, behavior and biome notes. You don't need to kill creatures to learn them.

  2. 02

    Listen for Leviathan audio tells

Every Leviathan has a distinctive sound cue before it appears on screen. Crank the audio and learn each silhouette's call. By the time you see the silhouette you are already too close.

  3. 03

    Carry a Survival Knife early

Predators like the Marrowbreach are killable with a knife if you commit to the engagement, but the trade is brutal. Carry one for emergencies, prefer detours when you can plot them.

  4. 04

Build a Seaglide before deep dives

Outrunning a creature is almost always safer than fighting it. The Seaglide cuts your travel time in half and lets you break a chase. Equip a Biomod like Dash for the same effect on foot.

  5. 05

    Mark territory with Beacons

Place a Beacon at the edge of a Leviathan's roaming territory so your crew knows where the danger zone starts. Beacons render through terrain and are visible from a long way off.

Subnautica 2 creature questions

01How many creatures are in Subnautica 2?
Subnautica 2 ships 51 creature archetypes in the May 14, 2026 Early Access build. The lineup includes two named Leviathans (Collector and Void), a Predator tier for apex carnivores like the Marrowbreach, a Carnivore tier for mid-size hunters, a Herbivore tier of grazing fauna, and a Passive tier of scannable creatures that flee on sight. Unknown Worlds confirmed more creatures will land in updates throughout the two to three year Early Access window.
02Which Leviathans appear at Early Access launch?
Two named Leviathan species ship at launch: the Collector Leviathan, an enormous cephalopod predator (tentatively Tyrannoteuthis phobocoeus) that broadcasts complex sonar patterns and feeds on hard-shelled prey, and the Void Leviathan, a scythe-finned open-water hunter that attacks in shivers. A juvenile Void Leviathan variant also appears in the current build. Each Leviathan has its own AI behaviour, biome territory, and audio tells you can learn before they appear on screen.
03What is the difference between a Predator and a Leviathan in Subnautica 2?
Leviathans are the largest creatures in the ocean and carry the Leviathan archetype and size tags. Predators are mid to large carnivores tagged apex or not-prey: aggressive hunters that actively pursue the player but stop short of Leviathan scale. Both categories deal lethal damage to an unupgraded diver, but you can fight a Predator with a survival knife or detour around one; Leviathans require a depth-rated submersible to survive an encounter.
04How do I scan creatures in Subnautica 2?
Use the Scanner tool from a few metres away. Each scan populates your PDA databank with a dossier entry covering biology, behavior and biome. Some creatures scan in one pass, others need multiple scans from different angles. Scanning is non-aggressive and works on Leviathans too, but you need a vehicle or stealth approach to scan them safely. The databank is the closest thing to a built-in bestiary the game offers.
05Are there returning creatures from Subnautica 1?
No. Unknown Worlds has confirmed that no characters, locations, creatures or vehicles return from the original Subnautica or Below Zero. Subnautica 2 is a clean slate set on a different alien ocean planet in the Ariadne Arm, with a brand new ecosystem built from scratch. The Reaper, Ghost and Sea Dragon Leviathans stay in their original games.
06Can creatures be tamed in Subnautica 2?
There is no taming system. Subnautica 2 keeps the same hands-off ecology approach as the original: creatures can be scanned, fed, killed or avoided, but never owned or commanded. Some Passive species follow the player briefly, the same way the Cuddlefish and Stalker did in Subnautica 1, but that is a script trigger, not a tame.
