About Subnautica 2 base building

Subnautica 2 ships 78 placeable base-building parts in its May 14, 2026 Early Access build, every one placed with the Habitat Builder tool. The system is a full redesign of the original Subnautica builder: modular seabed habitats that any crew member can extend, with a deeper decoration layer and explicit placement rules instead of free-form snapping.

Each part has a fixed recipe in basic materials. Most pieces cost one to three of Titanium, Strontium, Celestine, Germanium Ingot or Copper Wire; heavier structural pieces and labs cost more. Recipes ship in one of three states: Available from start (a few starter pieces), Locked behind a scan or fragment, or Hidden until a story trigger fires.

Co-op is built into the system from the ground up. A 1-to-4 player crew shares one base and one inventory pool: anyone with a Habitat Builder can drop a corridor, anyone can fill the shared lockers, and the four stations a base hosts (Fabricator, Modification Station, Processor, Biolab) are always available to the whole squad once placed. The Vehicle Bay is built separately as its own dockable module for the Tadpole and future vehicles.

Parts above are grouped by subcategory (Structural, Lighting, Furniture, Storage, Power, Labs, Posters and Decor, Roof and Wall Greebles, Other). When Unknown Worlds ships an icon for a part it appears on the card; when they haven't yet, the card carries the subcategory glyph in the accent colour so the grid still reads cleanly. The list tracks the current Early Access build and updates as patches ship.

Base building questions

01What is the Habitat Builder in Subnautica 2?
The Habitat Builder is the in-fiction tool that places base-building parts on the seabed. In Subnautica 2 it covers 79 distinct parts grouped by subcategory: structural pieces (hatches, dive elevators), lighting, furniture, storage, power infrastructure, labs and decoration. Every part has a fixed recipe with a small build cost in basic materials.
02How does co-op base building work?
Every member of a 1-to-4 player crew can place parts using their own Habitat Builder. The base is shared, so anyone in the squad can extend a corridor, drop a locker or hang a poster. Storage is shared too: a locker filled by one player is accessible to the whole crew, which is how four divers feed off the same resource pool when they're farming materials.
03What stations do I unlock by building a base?
The Habitat Builder unlocks four crafting stations once they're placed inside a base module: the Fabricator (tools, food, basic gear), the Modification Station (upgrades and modules), the Processor (refines raw materials into intermediate ingredients), and the Biolab (organic and creature-based projects). The Vehicle Bay is built separately as its own dockable module.
04Do I need a specific tool to build a base?
Yes. The Habitat Builder is the only tool that places base parts. You also need the raw resources listed in each part's recipe. Most parts ask for one to three of Titanium, Strontium, Celestine, Germanium Ingot or Copper Wire. Heavier structural pieces and labs cost more.
05Are base-building parts unlocked from the start?
Most parts ship in the Locked state and unlock once you scan their fragment or the relevant blueprint. A handful of starter pieces (hatches, single corridor segments) are Available from start so a fresh player can build a viable habitat on day one.
06Can I move or pick up a placed part?
Yes. The Habitat Builder has a deconstruction mode that returns the part's resources to your inventory. There's no penalty for moving a placed piece, so iterating a base layout is encouraged.
