- Eutrophication is runaway growth caused by a sudden rise in nutrient levels. At best it is harmful; at worst devastating.
- The influx of food (such as fertilizer or dead matter) causes uncontrolled growth of bacteria, algae, and other organisms - a bloom. The bloom depletes all oxygen in the water while shedding toxins and waste.
