Wildlife Photography

Guide

The Wildlife Update put 34 animals in the world and a camera in your hands. This guide covers getting the camera, why a picture sometimes refuses to register, and where each species is placed.

Getting the camera

A camera that can capture nature's wildlife in all its splendor.

  1. Find the download for the Photo Camera blueprint in the Starting Level, at the wildlife outpost.
  2. Craft the camera from 3x Scrap Metal.
  3. Photographs land in a journal tab of their own, and are saved to your computer as well.

Filling the frame

A shot only counts once the animal covers enough of the picture, and the bar is set per species. A deer has to fill a hundred times more of the frame than a firefly does. Each value is a share of the whole picture.

Where to look

The journal files each species under one biome, but that is a category, not a fence: crows perch in all four. Each biome map can show every wildlife spot in it at once.

Questions

How do you take photos in Outbound?

You need the Photo Camera. Its blueprint is a download in the Starting Level, at the wildlife outpost, and the camera is then crafted from 3x Scrap Metal. Point the camera at an animal, fill enough of the frame, and the shot is logged in the journal.

Why does my photo not count in Outbound?

Each species has a minimum share of the frame it has to fill. The most forgiving ask for 0.01% of it, and the most common threshold is 1%. If a shot does not register, zoom in or get closer rather than trying again from where you stand.

How many animals can you photograph in Outbound?

34, filed in the journal by biome: 12 under Starting Level, 8 under Pacific Coast, 7 under Canyons, 7 under Mountains.

Where do you find the animals in Outbound?

Wildlife is placed at 892 spots across the four biomes. Some are single animals, some are perches and resting places that draw from a small list of species. Every species page lists its own spots, and the biome maps can show them all at once.
