The Direwolf is a carnivorous creature with a focus on damage dealing. It excels at gathering Silk, Fiber, AnglerGel, and Pelt while ridden, making it a specialized utility mount. It can be airlifted by Argentavis, Karkinos, Megalosaurus, Quetzal, or Tusoteuthis for fast deployment.
Players typically tame the Direwolf for its high-yield gathering abilities on resource nodes, especially Silk.
The Direwolf spawns across 22 ARK maps in diverse biomes including deserts, snowfields, mountains, oases, wastelands, caves, and volcanic zones. It is very commonly encountered. Green zones on the spawn map indicate the highest density areas for locating this creature.
Each shape is a real spawn volume. Click for exact chance and zone info.
Direwolf must be tamed via knockout. Use a Bola, Bear Trap, or Plant Species Y to immobilize it. Then sedate it with Tranq Arrows from a Bow, Crossbow, or Compound Bow, or use Tranquilizer Darts from a Longneck Rifle.
Feed it Superior Kibble for the fastest taming. Raw Mutton also works well. The process takes about 22 minutes and requires no Narcotics. Use the calculator below for your settings.

Killing a Direwolf yields Hide, Raw Meat, and Pelt. The Hatchet yields the most Hide and Pelt, while the Pick maximizes Raw Meat.
Estimates based on game-extracted data (weights, quantities, harvest multipliers, damage type chains). Each harvest event independently rolls each resource - higher weight = higher drop chance. Actual yields vary with RNG.
The Direwolf has a +120% weakness to Instant HurtDinos, making it highly vulnerable to explosive damage sources. It also takes +100% more damage from spike walls. Conversely, it is highly resistant to mining drill damage, taking -100% damage. Melee and ranged attacks with impact effects are less effective.

The Direwolf has a head hitbox multiplier of 2.5×, making headshots highly effective for faster knockouts. Aim for the jaw area during taming attempts.

The Direwolf harvests 10× Silk per attack, making it the most efficient Silk gatherer.
It gains a -85% weight reduction on Pelt and Hide in its inventory.
It can be carried by Argentavis, enabling rapid deployment to remote Silk nodes.
Its bite attack also yields 2× Fiber, AnglerGel, and Pelt.
It is extremely vulnerable to explosion and spike wall damage, so avoid using it in heavy combat zones.
