水族箱的设计目的是容纳并维持多达八个小型水生生物，并安装在一个常规的多功能基地房间。 水生生物占所有已知物种的70%，使水族箱成为许多勘探作业中常用的工具。它经常被用来饲养牲畜以备日后食用，就像保存标本以供外星研究一样。一个自动化的环境调节系统意味着不需要喂养或照顾你的受试者。 注意，由于它的大小，普通的水族箱是不适合繁殖应用，而且生物是不可能交配。为此，最好是建造一个全尺寸的外星水族馆。
