小型，群居习性的猎物鱼，与圈圈鱼具有相近的亲属关系。
1.灰色色泽：
近乎半透明的鱼肉加上白色的肋骨状的斑纹，使这条鱼看起来死气沉沉。它利用这一点来避免引起捕食者的注意。
2.行为：
为了寻求保护而在群体中活动，但必要时会散开逃跑，因此那些幸运的逃出袭击者视线的棘鱼会游到海底并躲在碎石中。
