A Palaeoctopus can only be tamed while it sits camouflaged on the seabed. Clear every predator in the area first, then let it grab you. While held, feed it Narcotics or Bio Toxin exactly when it pulls you back and calls out. Each well-timed feed adds around 800 Torpidity, while a mistimed one costs you health. Low levels fall unconscious around 4,000 Torpidity and high levels need up to 15,000. The grip drains your oxygen and health the whole time, so bring SCUBA gear, Lazarus Chowder, and at least 500 health. Once it collapses, feed it Black Pearls or meat like any other knockout tame.
