Fire Lich

Fire Lich

This guide covers the Fire Lich, a level 120 fire mage boss found in a cemetery west of Grave Town. He is a free-to-play boss, so both free-to-play players and members can fight him. You cannot fight him in melee, so you need a bow. You do not need a shield either: you can beat him without taking any damage if you avoid all his attacks. It covers the arena, the four phases, the gear and his drops. In the gear tables, items marked Yes under Members can only be used by members, so free-to-play players should pick the others.

Partly player-tested

The stats, armour, gear tables and drops come from the game data. The arena and the four phases come from a player who fought him. The data only lists 2 phases (100% and 75% health), so the health points of phases 3 and 4 are approximate. The attack data only confirms his fireball type and that phase 2 uses an arena hazard sequence.

The boss at a glance

Level 120 with 3,500 health. Each extra player fighting him adds 80% more health, up to 30 extra players. His attacks are Mystical (150) and his damage is all Fire (150). His attack range value is 2,000. His skill levels are 35 in Magic, Defence, Evasion and Warding. His armour is Slash 150, Ice 150, Fire 75, Lightning 40, and Pierce 20. Pierce is his weakest armour of the types the weapons in the game data use, and Slash and Ice are his strongest. He gives the normal amount of combat XP (1 times).

The arena and the four phases

Think of the battlefield as a circle, like a whole pie. You keep moving and shooting him from range in every phase. Melee does not work, because from phase 2 he stands in a ring of fire. The whole fight long, he keeps dropping fireballs on you, 3 at a time. They always aim at where you are standing, not at random spots, and this never stops. Red markers show on the ground where they will land, so move clear of the marked spots and keep firing between dodges. Phase 1 (starts at 100% health): only the fireballs. Phase 2 (about 75% health): he surrounds himself with fire, which is why melee stops working. The fireballs keep coming. Phase 3 (about 50% health, approximate): he puts lines of fire in the ground that cut the pie into 4 quarters. You cannot cross a line without burning, so you are stuck in one quarter while you dodge the fireballs. Plan your moves inside your quarter, and try not to hang around the middle where the lines meet. Phase 4 (about 25% health, approximate): he adds 4 more lines of fire, cutting each quarter in half for a total of 8 slices. You are now stuck in one of those 8 small slices. On top of the fireballs he also drops a 4th, much bigger fire bomb. With a short-range bow this phase is harder, but it can still be done. Stay away from the middle, because that is where all the lines come together, and leave yourself room to dodge. If you avoid every attack you take no damage, so no shield is needed.

What the game data shows about his attacks

The game files contain one attack that is named after him: a launched, exploding projectile called Launching Explode FireLich. It is built on the general Launching Explode projectile, whose damage type is Mystical. That matches his Mystical attack stat above. The file stores a lifetime value of 5 for it, but does not list its damage number. His phase 2 switch (at 75% health) is set up to run a general arena hazard sequence. This fits the fire that appears around him, but the game files do not say which hazards he uses or in what order. Not in the game data, so it only comes from the player's fight: how many fireballs fall at once, how often, the fire lines in phases 3 and 4, and the bigger fire bomb. The hazard list also has no cooldowns, and a blank value there means unknown, not zero.

Recommended gear

Armour

If you dodge well you will rarely get hit, so armour is ranked by Ranged damage first, then Agility for move speed, then Fire armour in case a fireball does land. The top three for each slot are shown, best first. Body, Legs and Gloves have no Ranged damage items, so those slots are ranked by Agility, then Fire armour. Items that need a gathering or crafting skill, such as the Ore Crate, are left out. Needs is the skill level you need to wear it.

Bows

You need a bow, because from phase 2 melee does not work. Range matters here: the bows with a range of 1,200 let you keep your distance in the last phase, while the 750 range bows make phase 4 harder. Bows are sorted by their damage number. Best arrow is the strongest arrow that bow can fire. This ranking has not been tested against him.

Arrows

A bow cannot shoot without arrows. Arrows give your Pierce accuracy, and Pierce is his weakest armour (20), so better arrows mean more hits. Weaker bows cannot fire the best arrows, so check the Best arrow column above. Bring plenty, and use the Magical Antler to save some.

Trinkets

Agility is always worth having, because it makes you faster and helps you dodge. With a bow the Magical Antler is the best pick: it gives Agility and also saves some of your arrows. The Fire Totem is a good choice too: all his damage is Fire, and it gives Fire armour. Needs is the skill level you need to use it.

Potions

Since you do not use a shield, the only buff potion you need is the Archery Potion. It boosts your Archery level by 5, which helps your bow hit more often. Bigger vials last longer, and the Gilded one is members only. Drink it before you start. To make it, you mix 10 Distilled Spider Eye and 250 Essence in a cauldron, which needs Potion Making 30.

Also bring a few health potions, as you should for every boss, in case a fireball or bomb gets you. The strong version of each vial size is shown, best first. Even if you dodge everything, it is safer to have them.

Drops

His rare drops are the Ornate Fire Staff and the Fire Totem. The Fire Totem cannot be traded. The exact drop rates, the number of loot rolls and the group fight details are on the Fire Lich page, so they are not repeated here. Loot share is your percentage of the total damage dealt to the boss, and it sets your own chance to win each loot roll.

Tips

These tips come from a player who beat the boss solo, so treat them as advice, not confirmed mechanics. Do not try melee. Keep moving, and step clear of the red markers on the ground while you keep attacking whenever it is safe. Watch the arena, not just his health bar. The fire patterns get more restrictive as the fight goes on. In phases 3 and 4, stay inside your section and do not cross the fire lines. Plan your movement within your section instead of reacting at the last moment, and avoid the center where the lines meet. Watch for the much bigger fire bomb in phase 4 and move early, because it covers more ground than the fireballs and your slice is small. Do not stop attacking unnecessarily. The bow lets you shoot while you reposition, so dodge first, then shoot again as soon as you have a safe moment. The Bosses guide lists his rare drops and compares him with the other bosses.
