- The enormous living structure on the horizon can be characterized by what it is not:
- 1. It is not a tree. Surface analysis inconclusive.
- 2. It is not reasonably sized. Among the largest living things ever catalogued on a planetary surface. The visible structure is more than two kilometers tall and nearly three kilometers wide. Hydrogen bladders contribute to but cannot explain its stability.
- 3. It is not exclusively photosynthetic. Sunlight alone cannot feed its whole volume.
- 4. It is not well. Spectral analysis suggests little activity within the structure. It is dormant or dead. Organic offgassing suggests the onset of decomposition.
- Tentative conclusion: the organism has an unknown energy source and a way to draw in minerals and nutrients from a huge area. This implies the existence of a subsurface root network. The organism as a whole may be in distress. This could imply difficulties with the root network.
