Game Mechanics
Rules of over the hill read from the game's code and data: how time passes, how the weather changes, what floods an engine and how meteorites fall.
Time of day
| Topic | What the game files say |
|---|---|
| Length of an in-game day | 72.7 real minutes |
| Daytime (05:00 to 20:00) | 45.5 real minutes |
| Night (20:00 to 05:00) | 27.3 real minutes |
| One in-game hour | 3 real minutes |
| Camping | Time runs 50 times faster; the 12 in-game hours of a camp pass in 43.6 seconds. |
| Each area | In single player the save keeps the time and weather of each area and restores them when the game is loaded; an area without saved values, every multiplayer session and every arrival through a portal start at a random time and weather. |
Weather
| Topic | What the game files say |
|---|---|
| How long a weather lasts | 1 to 4 in-game hours, so 3 to 12.1 real minutes |
| Cloud Clearing Bell | Switches the weather to Clear. When the weather is already clear, it shows: “weather is already clear” |
Vehicle
| Topic | What the game files say |
|---|---|
| Flooding | While the engine's air intake is under water, a timer counts up; the engine floods at 8 s, 10 s with Water Resistance 2 and 12 s with Water Resistance 3. |
| Before it floods | With the intake out of the water, the timer runs back down at 0.75 s per second and starts again from zero once it is down to 4 s. |
| A flooded engine | It recovers after 12 s with the air intake out of the water. |
| Tool slots | A vehicle carries 1 tool at the start and one more with each Tool Slot upgrade, up to 4. |
| Dirt | The vehicle is cleaned in a cabin's camping area, when it reaches the Mechanic and when it is moved from the map to a cabin, a portal or the Mechanic. |
| Repairs | A cabin's camping area, reaching the Mechanic and moving from the map to a cabin, a portal or the Mechanic repair the vehicle fully; so does the Repair kit. |
| Special liveries | Distance only counts while at least one wheel touches the ground, in steps of 50 m. |
Meteorites
| Topic | What the game files say |
|---|---|
| How many | 2 or 3 at a time in each area, each at a random free spot from the area's fixed meteorite points. |
| When one falls | Meteorites placed when an area loads are already on the ground; a replacement falls 1 to 5 minutes after the game picks its spot. |
| Pulling it out | It needs enough winch ropes pulling under tension, and no two ropes may pull more than 120° apart. |
