1.ノコギリ状の歯:
他の草食動物が消化不能なサンゴをかじり取るための適応と考えられる。
2.2枚のヒレ:
種の特徴的な2枚のヒレは、軟骨性の骨格が伸びて形成されている。損傷を受けにくく推進力に優れるが成長は遅い。青い先端は消化菅の末端であり、消化したサンゴによって発光している。
昼間に最も活発に活動し近づくとすぐに逃げるが、夜間は発光するため、海底の隠れ場所において容易に観察可能となる。
