Unknown Worlds confirmed in the official Subnautica Discord that Subnautica 2 ships without a built-in map. The original Subnautica and Below Zero shipped the same way, and the studio has stated publicly that the sequel keeps the same philosophy.
Unknown Worlds wants players to read their surroundings, learn the silhouette of each biome and route by landmark. The PDA, Compass and Beacons are the in-fiction navigation toolkit, and the studio has stated publicly that Subnautica 2 will not add a built-in map.
That choice gives the ocean its sense of scale and dread, but it also makes a community-built map enormously useful. This page is that map.
Subnautica 2 adds a new layer on top of the biome system: regions. A region is a large area that contains multiple themed biomes and sub-biomes. Unknown Worlds confirmed in the Discord stage Q&A that at least two regions ship at Early Access, with more landing in later updates.
The point of the region structure is seamless travel between biomes inside one region, then a deliberate boundary you cross to enter a different visual and survival profile. Our map renders regions and biomes as toggleable overlays so you can plan a dive at the scale you need.

The on-screen Compass shows NWSE. Train yourself to read it constantly. Subnautica 2 keeps the same minimal HUD philosophy as Subnautica 1, so your compass heading is half of every navigation decision.
Unknown Worlds built the world around recognisable silhouettes. A specific spire, a wreck profile, a leviathan-shaped shadow. Memorise three to five landmarks per region and you will rarely get lost.
Craft a Beacon at the fabricator, place it at your base entrance or above a resource node. Beacons show through terrain and are visible from a long way off, the closest thing to a built-in waypoint system.
PDA scans populate your databank with biome notes and POI tags. The databank becomes your soft map, indexed by what you have already seen, even though there is no spatial map view.
